Preparation
No sealing on this piece. It was my intention that once I applied
my wash for antiquing, that it would raise some of the grain for
a more rustic look. Base coat front and sides with Chambray Blue.
Using the 60-grit sandpaper, sand the edges to look worn and some
random scratches on to the sky. Wipe with tack cloth. In a paper
cup, make a wash with 7-8 drops Raw Sienna, 3 drops of Walnut,
and 2 tablespoons of water, brush front and sides. Let dry. For a
more antique look, apply a second coat of wash. Transfer all 5
hills.
Painting Instructions
Hills: Using a #10 flat brush,
paint the two back hills Timberline Green. Using the same brush,
side load with Walnut and shade the two sides. Side load with
light Timberline Green and highlight the tops. Using a 3/4"
flat brush, paint the front hills. Side load a #10 flat with
Timberline Green and shade the tops and the two sides of the
center hill. Dry brush the centers of the three hills with Butter
Cream.
Trees: Transfer the trees minus the apples. I stippled the trees with 2 brushes; 1/4" stippler for the smaller, 3/8" stippler for the larger. Stipple in the base color of English Yew, allowing a couple of pockets of sky to show through. Pick up some Timberline Green, and dab some off, working form the centers upward. Begin to stipple, leaving some background to come through. Next, follow with some Light Timberline Green. Focusing more in the center, stipple in some Mustard. On one corner of your brush, pick up some Walnut and stipple the bottoms and a little on the sides. Using a #5 Round and a liner brush, paint trunks and branches Walnut. With your liner brush, paint apples in tree and on ground Moroccan Red. With a liner brush, dot randomly in the centers with Butter Cream. Take a drop of Walnut and add some water to make a very inky mix. With a liner brush,
